Current Events August 6, 1943;

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY, AUGUST 6, 1943:
Victory-Hushed Soviet forces wheeling southwestward from captured Belgorod today by-passed Kharkov, Russia's fourth city and industrial capital of the Ukraine, in a flanking drive threatening to encircle the great German-held base.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced the occupation of Munda today in a special communique revealing' that all organized enemy' resistance had ceased.
"Munda is now in our hands," the special communique said.

MOSCOW (UP).—Victory-Hushed Soviet forces wheeling southwestward from captured Belgorod today by-passed Kharkov, Russia's fourth city and industrial capital of the Ukraine, in a flanking drive threatening to encircle the great German-held base.
Northwestward 250 miles. Red army forces surged forward in a pincers maneuver against Bryansk, most powerful stronghold on the lower central front against which the Soviet conquerors defensive was picking up momentum.

ALLIED HEADQUARTERS. Southwest Pacific (UP).—
Gen. Douglas MacArthur announced the occupation of Munda today in a special communique revealing' that all organized enemy' resistance had ceased.
"Munda is now in our hands," the special communique said. "All organized enemy resistance has ceased; action is now limited to destruction of isolated enemy groups.
"One thousand, six hundred and seventy-one enemy dead have already been collected."
Field dispatches said the Jast of the Japanese defenders of Munda had been pushed from the western end of the airfield and were being destroyed by the American jungle troops who invaded the Japanese central Solomons stronghold138 days ago
