Admiral King Urges More
Aid For Russia And China
Positions They Hold Mean
'More Hell' For Japanese
Describes Operations In Pacific To Date
As General Plan Of Unremitting Pressure
WASHINGTON—(U.P.)—Admiral Ernest J. King, commander-in-chief
of the U. S. fleet, declared Saturday that world strategy dictates utmost
Allied assistance to Russia and China because of their key position in
the war and assured that the Japanese are going to get "more hell."
In one of his rare interviews with the press, the stern-countenanced,
hard-bitten naval chief made it clear that important amphibious operattions are contemplated for the future in the Pacific to , acquire new bases from which it will be possible to exert an all-out effort against Japan.
It was almost a year to the day since King last received reporters
to discuss the American invasion of the Solomons, which signalized
the passing of the United States from defense to the offensive in the Pacific.
Although reputedly shy in the presence of reporters, King appeared
completely at ease as he puffed on a silver cigarette holder and talked
fluently about the world situation. Occasionally, he glanced at a vast
map of the world which faced his desk.

The action in the Vella Gulf between Vella Lavella and Kolombangara Islands was fought about midnight.

Torpedoes and gunfire sent the enemy ships to the bottom to raise the toll of enemy warships lost in the current Solomons offensive to at least 23 and possibly 26 warships.
