Current Events July 30 1943;

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY, JULY 30, 1943:
Reports were current. in responsible sources in Wash this morning that an
important announcement would shortly be forthcoming concerning
Italy.
The belief prevailed that the announcement might be made
by President Roosevelt at his regular Friday news conference.
There were no definite Indications that the announcement
would involve any peace offer from Italy, but the view
prevailed that some important news concerning Italy was likely
to be given out by the government shortly.

Italian troops have revolted at Milan, refusing to obey orders to fire upon
demonstrating compatriots who swept the streets by the thousands
shouting demands for peace, a Chiasso dispatch said today

R. A. F. bombers dropped more than 2000 tons of explosives on Hamburg last nigh
it was announced today, giving that great North German port its seventh pounding since Saturday night.

Ships of the Royal navy bombarded the Italian mainland early today for the second time since the Sicilian campaign started, directing their guns against
a vulnerable railway line in the Crotone area.

Premier Marshal Pietro Badoglio ousted the Milan military commander,
General Canale, and ordered Gen. Vittorlo, Ruggcro, chief
of an Alpinist division, to take over in that industrial area, it was
reported.

LONDON, -July 30. (AP)—
R. A. F. bombers dropped more than 2000 tons of explosives on Hamburg last nigh
it was announced today, giving that great North German port its seventh pounding since Saturday night.
The air ministry said the attack was. made "in her great strength" and that the delivery of explosives was accomplished despite increased ground defenses and numerous German fighters.
Twenty-eight bombers were reported missing. A
dozen enemy planes were destroyed on this and other raids
the air- ministry said.

ABOARD BRITISH CRUISER, OFF ITALY, July 29(UP)—-(
Delayed)—Ships of the Royal navy bombarded the Italian mainland early today for the second time since the Sicilian campaign started, directing their guns against
a vulnerable'railway line in the Crotone area.
The fleet which previously had hit at the railway line in the same area along Italy's south coast blasted a railway bridge with six-inch shells and started fires ashore without
drawing any opposition.
From the bridge of this cruiser and f'ive miles of shores, steaming
along in a string line.
Salvo After Salvo
The ships first threw up a few flares, then sent salvo after salvo
onto the bridge and rail targets. Fires broke 'out as shell after
shell fell on line on which the railroad bed is located
