Current Events July 31 1943;

THIS WAS REPORTED TODAY, JULY 31, 1943:
Three small/Italian islands off the Sicilian west, coast have surrendered
unconditionally, it was announced, today, and
Allied warships have bombarded the mainland again in
a mounting land, sea and air offensive.

British air fleets, apparently crossing' Hamburg
off their target list1 as virtually destroyed after seven raids
in 120 hours, .switched the greatest air offensive of all time back
to the bomb-pocked Ruhr Valley last night and Heavily attacked
the production center of Renischeid

American troops used flame throwers to route the
Japanese from .coral and log pillboxes and advance through Lambeti
plantation east of Munda yesterday, it was announced today.

Madrid, July 31. —
Premier. Marshal Pietro Bado'glio of Italy. had established direct contact
with Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, through representatives sent by
airplane to North Africa, reports from France said today.

Allied warships have bombarded the mainland again in
a mounting land, sea and air offensive.
Additional progress by land forces in Sicily was revealed in a
communique. The British 8th Army below Catania inflicted'
heavy casualties on the defending1 German forces and the Americans
captured 941 additional prisoners, including 500 Germans, in new:
advances.
A Radio Algiers broadcast said the ' German and Italian.
troops in north and central Sicily were retreating toward a second
defense line based in the Caronian mountains,-east of- the-
'San Stefano-Nicosia road.

United Press Correspondent London, July 31.—
British air fleets, apparently crossing' Hamburg
off their target list1 as virtually destroyed after seven raids
in 120 hours, .switched the greatest air offensive of all time back
to the bomb-pocked Ruhr Valley last night and Heavily attacked
the production center of Renischeid.
Rounding out a week in which British and American bombers
dropped more than 15,000 tons of bombs on western Europe, fourengined
Sterlings, Lancaster and Halifaxea concentrated their assault
on the great machine tool factories clustered in and around Re-mscheid.
Fifteen bombers were lost, the air ministry announced.
