Monday, Aug. 28.—(AP)
After virtually clearing all Germans from the-Seine., between Paris and Troyes, U. S. armored spearheads wheeled northward today in a move taking shape as a ; flanking drive against the retreat route-. of the battered German 15th .Army from the Channel coast to Belgium and the Reich.
One of the probing spearheads : reached the Marne in the vicinity of Lagny, 15 miles-east of Paris and within ten miles of Meaux, where the Kaiser's armies were, halted 30 years ago
Far to the southeast, forces, which reached Troyes last week, thrust a column northward 12 miles toward Arcis-sur-Aube, encountering  stiffened
Nazi resistance. This force was but 118 miles from the Reich border The Algiers radio said U. S, spearheads had crossed: the Marne at Vitry 45 miles southwest of Verdun.

An avalanche of Russian tanks and motorized infantry poured into the rich Polesti oil region in the "heart of capitulated Romania yesterday, shattering
the Galati Gap defenses between the Danube and the Carpathians and overhauling thousands of 'Germans trying to escape to Hungary. In a disaster of Stalingrad proportions, the Germans were overwhelmed at Focsani and Galati, anchors on the defense line- and the Russians rolled on through, the petroleum fields of Ramnicul-Sarat, 22 -miles beyond Focsani and only 75 miles northeast of Bucharest.

Pro-Allied Hungarians called on the last big Axis satellite in Hitler's collapsing Balkan front to quit the war today as the Germans strove desperately to keep
Weakened Hungary in line by rushing defense construction workers to her imperiled, frontiers.
With Bulgaria awaiting delivery –of American-British armistice terms and persistent reports that troops of capitulated Romania already were fighting
'the Hungarians in disputed Transylvania, the Free Hungarian Council in London issued an appeal -to all Hungarians-to. overthrow their government and turn their weapons against the Germans.

The dropping of 42 tons of bombs on Japan's Iwo Jima, in the Volcano Islands, by American Army Liberators, was reported –today by Adm. Chester W. Nimitz. .
The smashing attack, a continuation of neutralizing raids in that area, was staged Friday by 7th Air Force bombers. They met intense anti-aircraft fire and strong fighter opposition, indicating the islands still are strongly fortified and that the Japanese have no intentions of lessening resistance in that last defense sector. on the direct sealane from the Marianas to Tokyo.

PARIS, Aug. 27.—(AP}—
The suburbs of
Paris were bombed by/German –planes shortly before midnight, and early today the skies were aglow from the light
of fires.
The Paris radio .in a broadcast recorded in London said the Germans also shelled Paris early Sunday morning.)
At this hour there is no estimate of the damage and it is not known whether any historical buildings or monuments were hit.
The death toll from the raid ; was placed at 110, with 719 persons injured.
