WASHINGTON. March 18 (AP)—
The navy announced today that
Japanese invasion force concentration
near Salamaua and Lae, New
Guinea, had been smashed by
American and Australian air
forces with the sinking or damaging
of twenty-three Japanese vessels
including twelve warships.----

Three Subs Attack Lone Merchant Ship
Two Torpedoes Send Vessel to Bottom of Sea
NORFOLK, Va . March 18.
Three enemy submarines, one
large and two small ones, pocketed
a medium size American merchant
ship off the Atlantic coast
early Sunday and sent her to the
bottom with two torpedoes placed
accurately in the engine room.

MacArthur Takes Over Command in Australia

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 18.(AP)—Australia confidently
and willingly accepted today an American command of all her defenses
land, sea and air—under the leadership of Gen. Douglas
MacArthur. With the enemy already at its gates and the first phases
of the battle for the continent being waged in the seas and skies off
the north coast, the commonwealth was electrified by the news that
the hero of Bataan had stepped in to guide its destinies----
