Japanese invaders overrunning the final Dutch citadel of Java have captured the war
capital of Bandoeng and their imperial headquarters declared today they had forced the
unconditional surrender of 93,000 Dutch and 5,000 United States, British and Australian
troops.
The Dutch stoutly denied there had been any general surrender, but in Adelaide, Australia,
Lieutenant Governor-General Hubertus J. Van Mook told of the fall of Bandoeng.
"But our people are battling on with the resources they have left," he added.
The official Tokyo announcement said the defending troops capitulated near Bandoeng
and near the naval base of Soerabaja at 3 p. m. (Presumably Tokyo time, or 2 a.m E. W. T.)

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UP)—Japan's most famous
general of this war has been sent to the Philippines for the
evident purpose of leading a new attempt to knock out General
Douglas MacArthur's American and Filipino forces.
The War Department announced today that the new
Japanese commander, General Tomoyuki Yamashita, conqueror
of Singapore, has succeeded General Masaharu
Homma, who is reported to have committed suicide because
of his failure to defeat Mac Arthur.
