South of the Liri, American tanks
made a surprise appearance in support of French troops, and with their support
the French registered substantial gains and over-
ran three towns. The French were bypassing
small pockets of resistance in the mountains, but reported they took a good bag
of prisoners and inflicted sharp -.causalities upon the enemy—both of which must be considered among'
the important objectives :of the present

on the occasion of the fourth birthday of their corps.
Lt. Gen. Sir Charles Lloyd,
commanding the London district, said to the home guardsmen in a special order
of the day: "Great events are facing you. Never before has the home guard been
more necessary to the safety of the nation . . . the crisis of the war
approaches."
Warning by Field Marshal
It was made known that Field Marshal
Lord Ironside, addressing home guards in Norfolk county Saturday, had said:
"There is no doubt that the
existence of the home guards stopped the Germans from coming here. It is quite
possible that when we make our great invasion the Germans will make some effort
to land in this country. If so, I know the home guards will know how to deal
with them, treat them like the vermin which they are. We have full confidence
in you."
