The column pushed almost
completely through the Lepini Mountains protecting- the southwestern flank of
the Via Casilins in a 12-mile advance that carried to the approaches to Artena,
only a little more than two miles below Valmontone, one of the strongholds in
what was believed to face the last German defense line below
Rome.
(The Nazi-controlled Vichy radio
said the Germans would abandon Rome without a fight to take up a new defense
line north of the city.)

American bombers were reported by
Berlin to be striking, at Germany again today in an apparent resurgence of the
pre-invasion bombardment after a day's lull enforced by murky .weather over the
continent.-Speedy Mosquito bombers of the
Royal Air Force swung a one-two
punch at Germany during the night despite unfavorable flying conditions,
jabbing at the Rhineland chemical center .of Ludwigehafen and the Aachen rail
hub "from which trunk lines branch out to the invasion coast, .
~By noon today the .
clouds over the channel .were beginning to break and the sun was filtering through, enabling the waiting Allied aerial
.fleets in Britain to go into action again, ;
"Soon after
noon the clamor of the Nazi radio warning system traced the course of United
States bombers and ' their fighter shield over .southwest and west . Germany in
the now familiar pattern of the prelude to daylight attacks on the Reich.
