Marcus Isle
Raid Hints
Japan Next
PEARL HARBOR, May 26—(UP)
—The almost complete lack of opposition
encountered by an American carrier-'force in a two-day raid on Marcus island,-
.only ' 1.100 miles . southeast of Tokyo, raised the possibility today that
naval task forces soon may hit Japan itself.
Vice Admiral John H. Towers deputy
commander of the Pacific fleet, contributed to the speculation by warning in a
radio broadcast last night that American carrier
task forces will "go ahead
like line blockers in football, mowing down resistance and finally hurling their
great strength directly at the heart of his (Japan's) homeland."
"Our Pacific enemy must be
wondering where we will hit him next," Towers added, "He knows we are
coming.
Only a few hours earlier, Pacific
fleet headquarters disclosed that planes from an American carrier task force
had dropped 148 tons of bombs on airdrome Installations In 313 sorties against
Marcus last Friday and Saturday at a total cost of four planes and three men.
