CAIRO. Dec. 17.—(INS)—Encircled
rearguard units of the
retreating Axis Africa Corps
fought tonight to break a steel
wedge separating them from the
rest of their army in Tripolitania,
even as the main body
of the British 8th army raced
into Marble Arch, only 15 miles
east of the battle^area.

The British Eighth army has
cut Marshal Rommel's retreating
African corps columns in-
two along the road to Tripoli,
trapping armored formation
which "already have suffered
heavy casualties and continue
lo be severely mauled," the
British announced Thursday.

SOUTH BEND, Ind., Dec. 17.,
(AP)—Judge J. Elmer Peak of
Superior Court sipped a cup of
coffee he brewed himself, and
called In newspapermen.
"Taste it," he said. "It's Just
about as good as coffee served
on most tables, at least,'it .beats
the recipe that President, Roosevelt
and Mayor La Guardia, who
recommended using c o f f e e
grounds a second time."
The recipe, one part coffee,
one part roasted rye grain.
