on the middle Don front is be-
lieved to be nearing its next ob-
jectlve — the key railroad town of
Millerovo .
The Moscow noon communique
says the Red Army columns,
sweeping steadily southward, are
brushing aside desperate Nazi
counter-attacks .

Africa Corps Passes Up
Series Of Excellent Defense
Stands. Retreat
Remains Orderly.

The Africa Corps is retreating
through one of the last natural
defense barriers east of Tripoli,
without even slowing up.
Today's Allied communique re.
ports heavy air attacks on Axis
transport columns continuing1
their flight 50 miles west of
Sirte.
This means the Africa Corps
has passed up a series of deep.
dried-up river beds that begin at
Sirte and provide an excellent de.
fense line.

are crumbling under a powerful
allied assault.
American light tanks, manned
by Australians, have crushed the
Japanese left flank — a strong belt
of concrete and steel pillboxes
that withstood infantry assault
for 31 days
