NORTH AFRICA. Dec. 5.—American

column back toward the Mediterranean
coast in disorderly retreat,
capturing more than 100 prisoners
and taking a town,

CAIRO, Egypt, Dec. 5.—An Italian
battleship and two Italian
cruisers were hit heavily by bombs
dropped in an air raid at dusk'
yesterday by United States Liberator
bombers over Naples, Italy.
Big bombs are said also to have.
burst in railroad yards, disrupting i
traffic in the key port on
west coast of the Italian peninsula,
and caused heavy damage along
the waterfront.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 5. — A Navy
Department communique disclosed
today that American dive bombers
and torpedo planes from Guadal-
canal island of the Solomon group
in the Southwest Pacific, had at
tacked a small Japanese force of
light surface ships about 150 miles
northwest of the island. The results
of the attacks were not revealed,
The American warplanes struck
on Thursday, Island time.
